Starring Romy Schneider, Alain Delon and Jane Birkin, “La Piscine” is a story about jeal- ousy and sexual tension on the French Riviera. A couple on vacation in a villa near St-Tro- pez spend a few lazy and event-free days in the scorching sun. When the woman invites her former lover and his teenage daughter to the house, tension rises, and the Côte d’Azur idyll turns dark.
The film builds its drama slowly, slyly following Delon and Schneider as they laze around half-naked in the heat equipped with frosty drinks and sly remarks. ”La Piscine” presents a kind of dream version of the unhurried vacation life: slow days by the pool, interrupted by lunches, cocktails and afternoon sex.
As a style manual, “La Piscine” is an exemplary lesson in Mediterranean chic. The actors are in their prime and look effortlessly elegant in perfect summer outfits to match their impeccable tans.
Schneider’s wardrobe consists of sophisticated pieces and glamorous evening dresses. During most of the day, we see her in classy black or white bikinis with simple accessories. When she occasionally leaves the villa for groceries, she keeps it simple with crisp shirts, white pants, espadrilles and a straw-shopper.
